  • Why Join a Fraternity or Sorority?

     

    Belonging means something different to everyone. Although academics are the most important aspect of your collegiate life, many of your most rewarding experiences will also occur in a variety of student activities outside the classroom. Students who become involved in campus organizations are more likely to continue their education through graduation because they develop ties and friendships which help them "anchor" to the university. Membership in student groups leads to satisfying college experiences and has been found to have a positive impact on grade point averages. In addition, many of these activities play a major role in helping you to develop leadership, communication, interpersonal, and managerial skills. These tools will prove invaluable to your success after graduation. Due to the unique residential nature of the university, there are also numerous opportunities for your participation in the life of both the academic and larger Chico communities.

     

    Fraternities and Sororities strive to create an enviornment where:

     

    -The principles and ideals of each organization's rituals are encouraged and practiced everyday
    -Safety from physical and mental harm is paramount
    -Academic achievement of the individual and the group is valued and rewarded
    -The definition of what it means to be a member of the Greek community is inclusive of all Greeks at Chico State and supports the University's non-discrimination policy
    -The Greek experience is a quality enhancement to the undergraduate educational experience
    -The Greek experience is an outlet for building long lasting friendships

     
    Academics

    Academic achievement is a value of California State University, Chico Greek community. Members are encouraged to strive for scholarly excellence through incentive programs, study partners, workshops and study hours, and national recognition. Members are rewarded for their academic achievements through chapter events and by membership in the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society. Each fraternity and sorority maintains internal academic standards that all members are expected to achieve.

     
    Leadership

    Greek Life offers a variety of opportunities that encourage members to get involved in their Greek organization and in other organizations on campus. Whether it be taking a leadership position or attending leadership programs conferences, without strong leaders, Greek organizations would not exist.

     
    Community Service

    Another large and often overlooked value of the Greek Community is its commitment to community service. Greeks partner with a variety of campus and community organizations to volunteer their time for service events and philanthropic fundraisers.

     
    Brotherhood/Sisterhood
    The result of fraternity and sorority membership: a bond that transcends time and space- a friendship that lasts a life time. A fundamental principle of every fraternity and sorority chapter is friendship: a brotherhood or sisterhood that one shares through the good times and provides support during the difficult challenges that come with being a college student. The fraternity and sorority chapter provides opportunities for members to periodically assemble and renew those bonds of friendship: Alumni weekends, newsletters, a chapter web page, and athletic events. Many national chapters have alumni chapters in major urban areas, where alumni/ae from various chapters can continue to create new bonds of friendship.
